How to Use Mulch & Woodchip

Our mulch and woodchip are versatile materials that can enhance both the look and health of your outdoor spaces. Here’s how to get the best results:

Flower Beds and Borders: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of aged mulch around plants to suppress weeds naturally while improving soil structure as it decomposes. This creates better growing conditions and reduces watering needs during Devon’s drier periods.

Garden Pathways: Fresh woodchip makes excellent natural pathways. The chips provide comfortable walking surfaces while allowing drainage, perfect for informal garden routes and woodland areas.

Established Tree and Shrub Areas: Spread fresh mulch in a circle around established trees and shrubs, keeping it away from stems to prevent pest issues. This conserves soil moisture, suppresses competing weeds, and gradually feeds the soil as organic matter breaks down.

Vegetable Plots: Use aged mulch between vegetable rows to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and create clean walking areas. The organic matter gradually improves soil fertility while reducing the need for frequent watering and weeding.

Slope Stabilisation: Woodchip helps prevent soil erosion on banks and slopes, while the organic matter gradually improves soil structure.

Apply at 2-3 inches deep for best results, avoiding direct contact with plant stems. Top up annually as the material naturally decomposes, contributing valuable organic matter to your Devon garden soil.

Mulch & woodchip FAQs

Fresh woodchip is newly chipped wood that hasn’t yet begun to decompose. It’s excellent for pathways and weed suppression but can temporarily reduce nitrogen in the soil as it breaks down. Aged mulch has already begun the decomposition process and will add nutrients to your soil rather than taking them away.

For most applications, a layer 2-3 inches (5-7.5cm) thick is ideal. Too thin and it won’t suppress weeds effectively and may wash away.

Our mulch is arb-grade, meaning it contains a variety of tree species from our tree work operations. This creates a diverse mix that breaks down at different rates, providing long-lasting benefits to your soil.

It’s best to use aged mulch around plants, especially young or shallow-rooted ones. Fresh woodchip can temporarily reduce nitrogen availability in the soil as it decomposes, which may affect plant growth.

When applied properly, woodchip and mulch are unlikely to attract pests. Avoid piling mulch too thickly or directly against plant stems or trunks, which can create hiding spots for insects and rodents.

Fresh woodchip is very effective at suppressing weeds, especially when applied at the recommended thickness. However, it won’t stop all weeds. Some tough perennials or wind-blown seeds may still appear but will be much easier to manage.
